WHAT WE BELIEVE

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

From our origin, Cumberland Presbyterians have pointed to John 3:16 as “the Gospel in miniature.” In this one verse, we find the basic tenants of Cumberland Presbyterian theology.

We Believe: in the only true and living God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and that Jesus came to earth as the only begotten Son of the Father… i.e. Jesus is “born” of God the Father.

We Believe: eternal salvation and reconciliation with God the Father come only through faith in Jesus the Son.

We Believe: that God loves you so much, He sent His only Son to face the cross of Calvary as the price of our redemption.

We Believe: Jesus died once for all humankind.

We Believe: “whosoever” includes both you and me. No one can be “good enough” as not to be in need of a Savior… and no one can know sin greater than the grace of God.

In short, we believe God in the person of Jesus Christ died once to restore to everyone, the divine privilege of living today and all eternity in a real love relationship with God the Father. And because we are restored in relationship with God, we are to reach out in Christian love one to another. Remembering always Jesus said, "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another" (John 13:35).
